Hosted IP systems deliver a solution similar to that described in Pure IP Systems.
The big difference is that where a traditional phone system is installed on the customer premises, hosted IP systems are located in a large central equipment location, off site.
A user requiring say, 20 telephones, would in fact be “sharing” a telephone system capable of serving many thousands of users. They simply pay for the users they require.
This can normally be scaled up or down almost instantly which can be a massive advantage to companies that need to deal with increased productivity at certain times of the year.
Typically the systems would use Broadband to provide the number of voice channels required, which again can be scaled up or down very quickly.
A significant benefit of Hosted IP is that it requires no major capital outlay, normally the cost of IP telephones and the Broadband connection. Cost is based on a per user per month basis and remote and mobile workers are simply the cost of another user.
There is normally no maintenance fee as all the equipment (with the exception of the telephones) is maintained and updated at the central site. Calls between users, wherever they are located are free. No IT expertise is required.
