Budd Communications Ltd

Broadband / ADSL
Refers to a high bandwidth service that can deliver applications from internet connection to voice calls and even video.

Contention Ratio
This is the number of potential exchange users that could be sharing your broadband connection.  For example if you only have a 512K connection with a 50-1 contention ratio at peak times your speed may be only 10.24K (The lower the first figure the better – e.g. 20-1 is better than 50-1).

Download Speed
The speed at which a Broadband circuit can access   typically web sites on the internet.

Non-Geographical Numbers
Offer many advantages to businesses.  One of the most popular is the 0844/0845 numbers.

Main Advantages - Callers only pay a local call charge wherever they are in the UK.  If your 0845 is supplied by BuddConnect.com currently there is no subsidy to pay.

The 0845 number is “pointed” at a landline number which rings as normal.  This can be changed at any time, for example in a power cut it could be transferred to a pre-determined back up number, i.e. home.  Moving premises is painless as you simply “repoint” the 0845 to your new number.

Monthly statistics are available on calls to your 0845 number.

Promotions using an 0845 (if pointed to a unique number) can be identified so that, for example, you answer the telephone as “Promotional Hotline” depending on equipment.

PBX
An old fashion term, but still widely used, to simply refer to a telephone system.

SDSL
Ahigher quality version of ADSL. SDSL has the same download and upload speed.

SIP Trunks
SIP trunks is the corporate way of facilitating calls over Broadband.  Generally a high quality Broadband connection is required which is dedicated to voice.  The Broadband is effectively “split” into channels to allow a number of simultaneous calls (actual number depends on bandwidth and equipment) to take place.

SIP trunks are very cost effective to rent in comparison with ISDN channels.

Call charges are normally cheaper except calls to mobiles which can be slightly more.

Upload Speed
This is the important consideration for delivering applications such as Voice over IP.  The higher the bandwidth the better,  e.g. 832K is much better than 256K
