Dynamic Routing
However many numbers you have on the ISDN circuit they are routed dynamically on demand.
This means instead of a single analogue line returning the "engaged" tone, subject to one of the channels being free, the second call will still get through.
Direct Dial Numbers (DDIs)
With analogue lines each person who requires a personal number must have a dedicated line.
With ISDN you would typically have say, 10 personal numbers but only have 4 actual lines. This is because ISDN is dynamic and it would enable up to 4 of the 10 numbers to call in simultaneously (assuming no outgoing calls were in progress). With ISDN30 a user could have 80 DDI´s over only 8 lines.
Caller ID
If this is ordered from the Network Provider, incoming calls will display the number of the person calling (unless withheld), on system display telephones.
If the caller’s name is stored in the speed directory it will show the name and the number.
DDI Divert Facility
When in the office a DDI can be forwarded to a colleague (or voicemail if available). However, when you leave the office the DDI can be forwarded to an outside or mobile number. Note this is only available for a DDI directed at a single telephone, not a group of telephones. The call from the office to a second party is a cost to the client, not the caller.
Transfer to an outside party
ISDN enables an incoming call to be transferred to a mobile phone or any other telephone location subject to a spare channel being available. Although you are paying for the ‘transferred’ section of the call and temporarily tying up 2 channels, many clients use this as a cost effective alternative to leased lines.
Clarity of Speech
ISDN lines deliver unrivalled quality for speech clarity.
Alpha Tagging
This is a very useful marketing tool. On system display telephones the number a person calls can be attached to a name. For example if you run 3 separate companies from 1 premises you can identify which company is being called when "Budd Communications" for example, appears on the screen. You no longer require a line for each company. Depending on call traffic 10 companies could be run over just 4 channels of ISDN2.
Advertising
Why not allocate a DDI number to, say, yellow pages. Everytime a caller rings the number the words "Yellow Pages" appear on the screen make sure your advertising is working for you.
Depending on the type of ISDN installed it is likely that all communications could be lost in the following circumstances:
MAIN EXCLUSIONS
OVERVIEW OF SYSTEM WORKING - ISDN 30
Subject to availability, your main telephone number would be transferred to ISDN 30. We would also arrange for a range of 'direct to the desk' numbers for allocation to individuals or departments (or devices) that require them.
The normal allocation from BT inclusive in the line rental is 10 numbers per channel (line). This will allow clients or suppliers who you have given access to your personal number to call you directly without tying up another member of staff to answer and transfer the call. If you are busy or away from your desk the call can be diverted to a colleague, the operator, or if installed, the voicemail will take a message for you.
OVERVIEW OF SYSTEM WORKING - ISDN 2
Subject to availability, your main telephone number would be transferred to ISDN 2. We would also arrange for a range of 'direct to the desk' numbers for allocation to individuals or departments (or devices) that require them.
The minimum allocation of DDI numbers is 10. They are then available in further blocks of 10 numbers. This will allow clients or suppliers who you have given access to your personal number to call you directly without tying up another member of staff to answer and transfer the call. If you are busy or away from your desk the call can be diverted to a colleague, the operator, or if installed, the voicemail will take a message for you.
ISDN 30 v. ISDN 2
The rule of thumb for deciding which type of ISDN to order is based on how many channels (lines) are required. If 6 or more are required we normally recommend ISDN 30 which has a minimum delivery of 8 channels.
ISDN 30 is infinitely more expandable than ISDN 2 (see under system expansion).
